Dr. Brian Adams diverts $1.9M from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics: 7 things to know

Brian Adams, MD, an orthopedic surgeon formerly providing care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, is under fire after an investigation by the state revealed that Dr. Adams allegedly diverted funds from the hospital to his personal bank account, according to a report by The Gazette.

Here are seven things to know:

 

1. Dr. Adams allegedly diverted nearly $1.9 million from the organization over 15 years.

 

2. Dr. Adams was employed by the UIHC's Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation from 1992 to 2014, when he resigned.

 

3. According to investigators, he diverted the funds in part by improperly billing insurers and law firms for services he performed, as well as royalties he received for products he developed for companies.

 

4. The state investigation was conducted after a caller on the UIHC compliance helpline alleged that Dr. Adams was referring patients from medical records reviews to his own clinic.

 

5. Dr. Adams said that he would be happy to pay back the money, according to the investigation report.

 

6. The state has also recommended that UIHC strengthen its internal controls.

 

7. A Johnson County Attorney has said that her office is reviewing the investigation to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
