A different kind of field — Why Dr. Michael Ciminiello hit it out of the park in orthopedics

Michael Ciminiello, MD, gave up a promising baseball career to pursue orthopedics, according to Riverhead News-Review.

Dr. Ciminiello opted to put down the glove and pick up the scalpel after a short career playing for the Detroit Tigers. After playing with the Tigers for one season as the team's 46th round pick, he chose to pursue a career in medicine. He finished his 10-game season with two hits, looking toward the future.

Dr. Ciminiello attended medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and went on to become a star orthopedic surgeon at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, N.Y.

As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in total knee replacement and total hip replacement, Dr. Ciminiello can focus on his relationships with patients and allieviating patients' pain. Rather than holding on to the hope making it to the pros, Dr. Ciminiello is confident in his decision to pursue orthopedics.
