National Academy of Medicine elects Dr. Shinya Yamanaka: 4 things to know

Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. Dr. Yamanaka spent two years as an orthopedic surgeon before focusing his work on basic research.

 

2. He is a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco.

 

3. In 2012, Dr. Yamanaka was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering that skin cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells by changing four key genes.

 

4. Eighty new members were elected during the National Academy of Medicine's annual meeting.
