Dr. Dominic Peters offers anterior hip replacement recovery — 5 things to know

Orthopedic

Dominic J. Peters, MD, at Salem Regional Medical Center in Salem, Ohio, is offering an advanced anterior replacement surgery to patients.

Here are five things to know:

1. Dr. Peters is an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Salem Orthopaedic Surgery at the hospital's new Orthopaedic Bone and Joint Center.

2. He completed his fellowship at the Hoag Orthopaedic Institute in Irvine, Calif., and has since brought over some of the techniques he learned to SRMC.

3. Dr. Peters performed 350 anterior hip replacement surgeries during the length of his fellowship, and says that nobody else is doing the procedure in this area.

4. With the new procedure, Dr. Peters makes an incision in the front of the hip without touching any muscles, merely moving them aside to access the hip joint. Because he's not cutting through muscle, there's less blood loss and less pain which leads to a quicker rehab and quicker recovery, as well as a smaller chance of dislocation.

5. Dr. Peters cautions although everyone is different, this surgery can help patients get home the next day and get back to normal within two weeks of physical therapy.
