HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital adopts Mako robotic-assisted surgery: 3 notes

Orthopedic

HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland, Ill., now uses Mako robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.

Here's what you need to know:

1. The Mako robot technology will be used for partial knee replacement and total hip replacement procedures.

2. The Mako system personalizes surgery for each patient. Surgeons upload a 3-D model of a patient's joints onto the Mako system, where they can set an individualized surgical plan. The Mako system then guides the physician during the operation.

3. In addition to facilitating more accurate implant placement, the Mako system advertises that it leads to reduced pain, faster recovery and better range of motion when compared with traditional knee or hip replacement.
