Michelle Bauer was suffering from avascular necrosis and was losing movement in her wrist when she visited Noah Shaftel, MD, of The Fort Wright, Ky.-based Christ Hospital Outpatient Center.
Ms. Bauer said Dr. Shaftel tried everything he could do to avoid having to perform a wrist fusion including taking Ms. Bauer's case to an orthopedic conference. He discovered two to three documented cases on the condition and readied Ms. Bauer for surgery.
The first procedure Dr. Shaftel performed was unsuccessful. Undeterred he performed a partial capitate excision with a tendon interposition and Ms. Bauer regained movement in her wrist, improving more than what she expected, she said.
