Ceramic-on-ceramic hard-on-hard bearing surfaces in total hip arthroplasty may be a viable option to reduce long-term wear in younger patients, according to a study in The Journal of Arthroplasty.
Here are three things to know:
1. The researchers prospectively enrolled 40 patients to undergo a metal-on-metal THA and 42 patients to undergo a CoC THA using the same acetabular component. Comparative outcomes included clinical scores, revision or reoperation for any reason, complication rates and radiographic outcomes.
2. The clinical outcomes of the CoC cohort exceeded that of the MoM cohort. The researchers recommend close surveillance of MoM THA patients given the higher reported failure and complication rates.
3. Joint replacement surgeon Tyler Steven Watters, MD, of Raleigh (N.C.) Orthopaedic Clinic, is a co-author of the article. Dr. Watters specializes in adult reconstructive joint replacement surgery and is interested in periprosthetic and lower extremity fractures.
