Foot and ankle surgeons Michael I. Goldberger, MD, and David M. Epstein, MD, of Cedar Knolls, N.J.-based Tri-County Orthopedics, are performing a motion-sparing procedure for patients with arthritis in the big toe.
Here are four things to know:
1. Drs. Goldberger and Epstein are performing Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant procedures for first metatarsophalangeal joint replacement patients.
2. The Cartiva SCI procedure removes damaged tissue from the surface of the first MTP joint before implanting a biomaterial device to serve as a new joint.
3. The implanted device is a hydrated polymer engineered to withstand repetitive motion and pressure in normal walking conditions.
4. Drs. Goldberger and Epstein are board-certified orthopedic surgeons.
