Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Michael Maloney of U of Rochester Medical Center

Michael Maloney, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center.

With expertise in sports medicine as well as reconstructive and arthroscopic knee, shoulder and elbow surgery, Dr. Maloney serves as chief of sports medicine for URMC orthopedics.

Additionally, Dr. Maloney is director of URMC's Center for Human Athleticism and Musculoskeletal Performance and Prevention, which takes a multidisciplinary approach to injury prevention by integrating orthopedic and cardiovascular care, physical therapy, rehabilitation, nutrition and mindfulness.

Dr. Maloney serves as team physician for The Rochester Red Wings, a professional Minor League Baseball team, as well as several collegiate sport teams in the Rochester area.

He has authored medical journal articles on topics such as injured and uninjured knee biomechanics and experimental gene therapy for cartilage repair. Dr. Maloney is actively involved in research on stem cell and tissue engineering techniques, including muscle, tendon, ligament and cartilage injuries treatment.

After earning his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C., Dr. Maloney completed his residency at the University of Rochester and a sports medicine fellowship at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.
