2 orthopedic surgeon brothers complete 1st Artsakh medical mission: 5 notes

Shahan Yacoubian, MD, and Stephan Yacoubian, MD, both orthopedic surgeons at Orthopedic Surgery Specialists in Burbank, Calif., completed their first medical mission in Stepanakert, Artsakh, Asbarez Armenian News reports.

Here are five things to know:

1. The medical mission was implemented by Paramus, N.J.-based Armenia Fund USA and Adventist Health in Roseville, Calif. Additionally, DJO Surgical donated equipment and supplies.

2. Divided in two parts, the first half of the mission was at Noyemberyan Hospital in Armenia from Sept. 22-26. The second half of the mission served Stepanakert Republican Medical Center in Artsakh from Sept. 27 to Oct. 5.

3. During the Stepanakert-based mission, Drs. Shahan and Stephan Yacoubian performed 14 total knee implant surgeries and four arthroscopic procedures.

4. Dr. Shahan Yacoubian surgical specialties include joint replacement, complex revision, trauma and fracture surgery. He completed fellowship training in adult hip and knee replacement as well as reconstructive surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

5. Dr. Stephan Yacoubian specializes in shoulder, knee conditions and hip as well as minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, primary joint replacement and fracture repair. He completed fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at Farmington-based University of Connecticut College of Medicine.
