Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Clarence Shields, Jr. of Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute

Clarence L. Shields, Jr., MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles.

Dr. Shields is also affiliated with Los Angeles-based University of Southern California, where he is an associate clinical orthopedics professor.

With expertise in sports medicine, Dr. Shields serves as a neutral physician for the NFL. Previously, he was the orthopedic consultant for the Los Angeles Rams, and he is a former president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

In 1994, Dr. Shields founded the Team HEAL Foundation, which provides certified athletic trainers and related services to athletes at participating high schools in California.

Dr. Shields is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, NFL Physicians Society, International Society of the Knee and California Orthopaedic Society, among others.

After earning his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb., Dr. Shields completed his residency at the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center and a sports medicine fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute.
