Two patients of Morgantown-based West Virginia Medicine's J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital received free hip surgery through Operation Walk USA, according to The Morgantown News.
Here are four things to know:
1. WVU Medicine performs two or more free surgeries each December through the health system's collaboration with Operation Walk USA, which began in 2010.
2. Operation Walk USA is a nationwide program that provides joint replacement surgery at no cost for patients who are unable to afford the cost of surgery.
3. Orthopedic surgeon Benjamin Frye, MD, serves as director of Operation Walk USA at WVU Medicine.
4. "This is a very important program that has become an annual tradition here at WVU Medicine," Dr. Frye told Morgantown News. "We are proud to be a part of this program and are happy to have provided this life-changing surgery to a new set of patients this year."
