Raleigh, N.C.-based EmergeOrtho orthopedic surgeon Michael Marushack, MD, qualified to run in the Boston Marathon, according to StarNews Online.
Here are four things to know:
1. Dr. Marushack specializes in knee and shoulder treatment as well as joint replacement.
2. When his wife was away completing fellowship training in 2017, Dr. Marushack, who was looking for a hobby, joined a local running group that was training for the Boston Marathon.
3. He ran the Wrightsville Beach (N.C.) Marathon in 2017, which qualified him for the Boston Marathon. Dr. Marushack told Star News he uses his experience as a runner to help inform patients about strengthening their bodies.
4. "Just sort of the repetitive nature of running can cause breakdown of muscles and tendons if you're not careful, so it's not enough just to be out there run a lot," Dr. Marushack told Star News. "You need to also stretch, work on your flexibility and also do some strengthening to maintain the strength of the muscles."
