Sharonville, Ohio-based Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine orthopedic surgeon Mohab Foad, MD, has begun using a surgical technique that allows patients to remain awake during surgery, WLWT Channel 5 News reports.
Here are four details:
1. Dr. Foad specializes in hand and upper extremity disorders as well as reconstructive microsurgery.
2. For various hand and upper extremity procedures, Dr. Foad uses local anesthetic to numb the patient's surgical site in order to operate while the individual is still awake.
3. The wide-awake technique is less risky for patients than being put under with anesthesia, Dr. Foad told WLWT News.
4. Dr. Foad is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Society for Surgery of the Hand and Academy of Medicine Cincinnati.
