Jaspreet S. Sekhon, MD, performs an operation designed to help knees last longer, according to WILX 10, an NBC affiliate.
Dr. Sekhon, an orthopedic surgeon who practices at New York City-based Mount Sinai, called the procedure "meniscal preservation" surgery. The procedure involves stitching tears together and compressing the tissue in order to improve the chances of long-term healing.
The best candidates for meniscal preservation surgery do not have arthritis, have healthy knees besides the tear and are committed to intense rehabilitation, according to the report.
