Little Rock-based University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Chairman of Orthopedics C. Lowry Barnes, MD, is a finalist for Arkansas Business' Administrator of the Year.

In an article about Dr. Barnes, Arkansas Business outlined his career as an Arkansas native that earned his degree at UAMS. He then completed additional fellowship training at Boston-based Harvard before returning to Arkansas and launching a private practice.

He was the first orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in joint replacement to practice in the state. He eventually joined Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics and then CHI St. Vincent, both in Little Rock, before returning to UAMS.

In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Barnes has several patents for developing hip and knee replacements and he has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, according to the report. He sees around 1,000 patients per month in addition to his administrative responsibilities.
