Orthopedic surgeon alleges wrongful termination from Pennsylvania practice after military service: 4 details

Robert Handy, MD, filed a complaint against his former practice and partners, alleging unlawful termination, according to the Penn Record

 

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Handy filed the complaint in the U.S. District Court for the East District of Pennsylvania on May 31. He alleges the defendants, which include Doylestown, Pa.-based Bucks County Orthopedic Specialists and its physician shareholders violated the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act and Pennsylvania Military Affairs Act when he was terminated last month.

2. Dr. Handy also alleged minority shareholder oppression in the complaint; he became a shareholder in Bucks County Orthopedic Surgeons in 2007 after joining the practice three years earlier. The complaint states he was terminated in May without cause.

3. As a U.S. Army veteran and member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Dr. Handy has spent time in military service. He spent four months deployed overseas in 2016-17.

4. In the complaint, Dr. Handy alleges his military service factored into his termination.
