Dusty Smith, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Gadsden, Ala.-based Riverview Regional Medical Center invented a new medical device, Sagittae, for spinal fusions, reports The Gadsden Times.
Four insights:
1. Sagittae is a lateral lumbar interbody fusion device which is customizable to each patient.
2. Its design enables it to be adjusted after it is placed in between the vertebrae by tilting or changing the height.
3. Sagittae received FDA 510(k) clearance in October 2018. Dr. Smith has used it in three surgeries at RRMC so far.
4. SpineEx manufactures the device and says that it can be used to treat patients with degenerative disc disease, scoliosis and sciatica among other spine conditions.
