HSS' Dr. David Mayman replaces Al Roker's hip — 5 details

Hospital for Special Surgery's David Mayman, MD, performed total hip replacement surgery on Al Roker, a co-host of NBC's TODAY show. TODAY reported the news.

Five details:

1. Dr. Mayman replaced Mr. Roker's hip Sept. 18 at New York City-based HSS. Mr. Roker, who is 65, had the operation to relieve severe osteoarthritis pain.

2. The procedure took one hour and Mr. Roker was discharged within two days.

3. Dr. Mayman also replaced Mr. Roker's knee three years ago.

4. Mr. Roker returned to the TODAY show on Sept. 30, using a cane. NBC News medical correspondent John Torres, MD, visited the set to discuss hip replacement surgery.

5. Dr. Torres said Mr. Roker's quick return to his feet is normal for hip replacement patients. "A lot of people don't realize it. You get up that same day. [Physicians] want you walking because they found out of it you don't do that, it's going to take a lot longer to recover."
