UNC's new joint replacement specialist sees promise in robotics — 5 details

UNC Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Lenoir in Kinston, N.C., added Louis Peak, MD, to its team, according to Kinston.com.

Five details:

1. Dr. Peak came to UNC Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in September from Aiken, S.C.-based Carolina Musculoskeletal Institute.

2. Dr. Peak is a general orthopedic surgeon with expertise in knee, hip and shoulder replacements.

3. He will devote a large portion of his time to covering the emergency department at UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston.

4. UNC Orthopedics and Sports Medicine CEO Bob Enders is receptive to introducing robotics for total joints somewhere down the line, according to Dr. Peak.

5. Dr. Peak sees robotic surgery as "the wave of the future," with Stryker's Mako robot expected to have shoulder and spine applications within about two years.
