Here are six orthopedic surgeons making headlines this week.
Eric Smith, MD, joined Boston-based New England Baptist Hospital as chief of arthroplasty. Dr. Smith is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement, reconstruction surgery and revision surgery. In his new role, he is involved in clinical care, research and teaching efforts.
Cody (Wyo.) Regional Health added Christopher Rice, MD, to its staff. Dr. Rice completed his fellowship at St. Paul, Minn.-based HealthPartners Institute Regions Hospital. He specializes in hand surgery, wrist pain and general orthopedics.
UNC Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Lenoir in Kinston, N.C., added Louis Peak, MD, to its team. Dr. Peak is a general orthopedic surgeon with expertise in knee, hip and shoulder replacements. He will devote a large portion of his time to covering the emergency department at UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston.
David Helfet, MD, operated on the right wrist of New York Mets infielder Jeff McNeil. Mr. McNeil had a broken right distal ulnar fracture. Dr. Helfet repaired it Oct. 2. Dr. Helfet is an orthopedic surgeon at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery.
Stephenson Ikpe, MD, joined Piedmont Physicians Rockdale Orthopedics in Conyers, Ga. Dr. Ikpe specializes in orthopedics and sports medicine. He has a special interest in knee and shoulder surgery. He underwent residency training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh.
Clyde, N.C.-based Haywood Regional Medical Center welcomed Abby Maxwell, MD, and Charles Maloy, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Maxwell comes to HRMC from Charles DePaolo Orthopaedics in Asheville, N.C. Dr. Maloy joins after completing a fellowship at Ochsner Sports Medicine Institute in Elmwood, La.
