Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon notes spike in hand injuries during stay-at-home order

Orthopedic

Sanjeev Kakar, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, is seeing an increase in hand injuries during the COVID-19 pandemic, KIMT3 reports.

Dr. Kakar, a hand and wrist specialist, said that household accidents have become more common due to stay-at-home guidelines.

Injuries include kitchen knife cuts and lacerations, table saw and lawn mower mishaps, as well as gun injuries, which he says are common in his practice this time of year.

Dr. Kakar cautioned that patients coming to the ER with these orthopedic injuries are putting themselves at risk of contracting COVID-19.

He is asking people to take their time with home projects, keep tools away from children and advising against the use of dull knives, which can slip and cause an injury.
