Brett Greenky, MD, of Syracuse (N.Y.) Orthopedic Specialists recently scrapped his appeal of a $2 million malpractice case after settling with a patient he is accused of permanently injuring during a hip replacement, Syracuse.com reports.
A jury found Dr. Greenky and Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists guilty July 2, 2013, of mishandling the surgery, which was performed at Syracuse-based St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center.
The lawsuit highlighted the policy of concurrent surgeries, which permits surgeons to operate in two rooms simultaneously.
Senior surgeons typically complete the most critical part of the procedure and leave a resident or physician assistant to close the wound while they begin a second surgery in another OR.
The patient who was allegedly injured was the sixth of Dr. Greenky's 14 patients that day.
Dr. Greenky denies any wrongdoing, but settled out of court with the patient for an undisclosed amount of money May 12.
