The University of New Mexico Health Sciences campus in Rio Rancho broke ground Aug. 18 on the UNM Center of Excellence for Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, NPR affiliate KWRG reports.

Spanning 50,000 square feet, the $21 million center will combine clinical and research activities. It will be adjacent to Sandoval Regional Medical Center, where most of UNM's joint replacement procedures are performed.

SRMC may add five more total joint surgeons in the next five years, Jamie Silva-Steele, RN, the hospital's president and CEO, told KRWG

The center is expected to open in November 2021.
