Orthopedic

Orthopedic oncologist and joint replacement surgeon Joel Sorger, MD, joined Cincinnati-based Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in September, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier.

Six things to know:

1. Dr. Sorger is the only orthopedic oncologist and joint replacement surgeon in Cincinnati, he told the Cincinnati Business Journal. He's one of 120 in the U.S., and one of six in Ohio.

2. As a Beacon provider, Dr. Sorger will handle some of the Tri-State region's most complex cases. He will see patients requiring specialized care at Beacon locations in Montgomery, Anderson and Miamisburg.

3. Dr. Sorger said he was compelled to join Beacon after seven years at TriHealth because of the group's physician-led, private practice model.

"I think Beacon is a better fit for my personality, and it's really not anything more complex than that," he said in an interview with the Cincinnati Business Courier. "I align really well with the goals that Beacon is trying to achieve and what they want to become."

4. Dr. Sorger has experience treating numerous types of orthopedic cancers, including Ewing's sarcoma, osteosarcoma and other musculoskeletal system malignancies. He also performs advanced hip and knee procedures.

5. Dr. Sorger serves as the sarcoma program co-director at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He is also a clinical assistant professor for Wright State University School of Medicine and an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati.

6. After the addition of Dr. Sorger in September and the acquisition of Montgomery-based Reconstructive Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in August, Beacon has a total of 35 physicians. It operates 13 locations in the Tri-State region.
