U.S. News & World Report recognizes top hospitals in orthopedics every year based on data gathered from the hospitals.
The hospitals are measured on several benchmarks, including 30-day survival rate, patient discharges home and the number of high-risk patients treated in orthopedics over a three-year period from 2018 to 2020. U.S. News also takes patient experience, technology and nurse staffing into consideration.
Here are five things to know about each of the top 10 hospitals for orthopedics.
Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City)
1. Hospital for Special Surgery was founded in 1863 and is focused on orthopedics and musculoskeletal disorders.
2. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the hospital No. 1 in the nation for orthopedics for the last 11 consecutive years.
3. Surgeons perform more than 35,300 surgical procedures at the 205-bed hospital annually. The hospital also has a research program with a $49 million operating budget.
4. Hospital for special surgery has 51 operating rooms and 380 members on the active medical staff.
5. Lou Shapiro is president and CEO of the hospital. Bryan Kelly, MD, is the surgeon-in-chief and medical director.
Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.)
1. The W. Hall Wendel Jr. Musculoskeletal Center brings together Mayo's multidisciplinary orthopedic specialists at the MInnesota campus. The 245,000-square-foot center opened in 2007 and has 57 examination rooms as well as an outpatient surgery center.
2. Mayo's orthopedic research is robust. More than 20 physicians and scientists from the orthopedic surgery department receive about $7 million in annual funding per year.
3. The health system's orthopedic surgeons and scientists are engaged in 94 open studies.
4. The orthopedic department at Mayo's Rochester campus includes 60 physicians.
5. Daniel Berry, MD, is chair of orthopedic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles)
1. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is affiliated with Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, which provides care for the Los Angeles LA Dodgers and Los Angeles Clippers.
2. The orthopedic team provides care for adults and children over the age of 13. It also offers physical therapy and outpatient joint replacements.
3. Mark Vrahas, MD, is the Levin/Gordon DIstinguished Chair in Orthopaedics at Cedars-Sinai. Sonu Ahluwalia, MD, is clinical chief in the department of orthopedic surgery.

Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)
