Dr. Stephen Murphy performs 1st total hip replacement with augmented reality system

Orthopedic

Surgical Planning Associates received FDA 510(k) clearance for its HipInsight augmented reality intraoperative guidance system for joint replacements, and the technology debuted in February.

The system got clearance Jan. 28, according to a Feb. 10 news release. Stephen Murphy, MD, founder of SPA, performed the first total hip replacement with the system Feb. 4 at Salem, N.H.-based North Atlantic Surgical Suites.

"Traditional navigation systems, robotics and intraoperative imaging provide information on flat screens outside the surgeon's view of the patient, leaving the process disjointed and awkward," Dr. Murphy said. "The HipInsight system enables surgeons to stay focused on the patient, projecting holograms on AR glasses that effectively give them 'X-ray vision,' so that surgeons can see what they need to see, when they need to see it, right inside the patient's body."
