Here are the CEOs and presidents leading 10 orthopedic hospitals named in Newsweek's "World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2021" list.
1. Louis Shapiro. CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Mr. Shapiro has been CEO since 2006. Under his leadership, HSS expanded its facilities and recognition as a leader in orthopedics.
2. Gianrico Farrugia, MD. CEO of Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.). Dr. Farrugia was named president and CEO in 2019. He worked as a gastroenterologist for more than 26 years at Mayo Clinic.
3. Redonda Miller, MD. President of The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). Dr. Miller was named president in 2016. She started as a medical student and joined the medical faculty in 1997.
4. Peter Slavin, MD. President of Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). Dr. Slavin was named president in 2003. He also teaches internal medicine and healthcare management at Boston-based Harvard Medical School.
5. Dean Harrison. President and CEO of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago). Mr. Harrison joined Northwestern Memorial Healthcare in 1998. He is on the board of directors for multiple groups, including the Center for Medical Interoperability, Executives' Club of Chicago, Illinois Hospital Association and Navy Pier.
6. Sunil Eappen, MD. Interim president of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Dr. Eappen took the interim role March 1. He also serves as the hospital's CMO.
7. Robert Grossman, MD. CEO of NYU Langone Health and Dean of NYU School of Medicine (New York City). Dr. Grossman was named CEO and dean in 2007. He launched a campus transformation that added more than 8 million square feet of clinical, educational and research space.
8. Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD. President and CEO of Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Mihaljevic joined Cleveland Clinic in 2004 as a surgeon in the thoracic and cardiovascular department. He has performed almost 3,000 operations in his career.
9. Stephen Klasko, MD. President of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health (Philadelphia). Dr. Klasko was named president of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health in 2013. Jefferson Health has grown from 3 to 14 hospitals under his leadership.
10. John Lynch, MD. President of Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). Dr. Lynch was named president in August 2020. He was previously the hospital's CMO and COO.
