During the pandemic, some orthopedic practices found that patients became more engaged with their procedures — wanting to know why and how their care is delivered.
As this trend continues, patients will expect to be more involved with procedures and facilities to be more transparent with the processes.
Here are two Raleigh, N.C.-based orthopedic leaders on how practices can best manage patient engagement.
Zachary Welch. Administrator for Wake Orthopaedics: We are seeing a much more informed market that responds well to high levels of transparency and engagement when developing their plan of care. Patients want to know and understand the rationale for decision-making and the steps to address their needs. Furthermore, practices must present comprehensive and transparent safety plans to patients and visitors that ultimately keep everyone safe and instill confidence while engaging in that environment.
Gurvinder Deol, MD. Spine Surgeon and Medical Director for Wake Orthopedics: Groups that are able to find more sophisticated ways to engage their patient population in their care will position themselves to deliver higher levels of transparency and ultimately develop more engaged patients. Rightfully so, patients expect higher levels of involvement in their plan of care and want to better understand the services being offered. Groups must find innovative ways to deliver this communication that lead to patients taking ownership over the necessary components of their care.
