Dr. April Armstrong named chair of orthopedic and rehabilitation department at Penn State Health

April Armstrong, MD, was named chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine, according to a May 27 release. 

Dr. Armstrong has served as interim chair since July 2019 and will assume the official role July 1. She has worked at Hershey-based Penn State Health since 2001 and currently is the James Bobb Professor of Orthopaedics.

She also has served as vice chair for Clinical Affairs and Quality and associate CMO for outpatient surgical care within Penn State Health Medical Group, among other positions for Penn State Health. 

Her research focuses on biomechanical failure and loosening mechanics for the glenoid component for total shoulder replacement, according to the release. 

She is listed among the Best Doctors in America and was the recipient of several educational awards, including the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Armstrong also is a director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and an associate editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
