Private equity continues to invest in orthopedics: 13 transactions

Private equity firms are injecting more capital into spine and orthopedic groups, particularly those with ASCs, as higher-acuity specialties are expected to become a key opportunity for growth in the outpatient setting.

Here are 13 key deals in the orthopedics industry this year:

1. Physicians Regional Healthcare System teamed with Healthcare Outcomes Performance Co., a private-equity-backed practice management firm in Phoenix, to expand the orthopedic surgery program at a hospital in Naples, Fla.

2. PartnerCare, a portfolio company of private equity firm Shore Capital Partners, affiliated with Hollywood-based Florida Spine & Pain Center.

3. Reno, Nev.-based Spine Nevada and Tahoe Fracture & Orthopedic Medical Clinic in Carson City, Nev., merged to create a 60-provider group, the largest musculoskeletal care platform in the state.

4. Trinity Hunt Partners teamed with Los Angeles Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists and Portland-based Northwest Extremity Specialists to form a musculoskeletal practice management platform.

5. Tucson (Ariz.) Orthopaedic Institute became the ninth practice to affiliate with Gainesville, Fla.-based Orthopedic Care Partners.

6. Orthopedic Care Partners, backed by Varsity Healthcare Partners, also acquired Motion Orthopedics in St. Louis earlier this year.

7. Stone Point Capital invested in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based American Orthopedic Partners, with orthopedic surgeons James Andrews, MD, and Russell Warren, MD, joining the practice as board members.

8. Summit Spine & Joint Centers, a 21-provider group with ASCs and pain management clinics in greater Atlanta, was acquired by MSouth Equity Partners.

9. ArthroLense, a medical device company founded in 2019 by orthopedic surgeons Russell Nevins, MD, and David Backstein, MD, secured funding from Lynx Equity Limited.

10. U.S. Orthopedic Partners, a management services organization backed Thurston Group, acquired Jackson (Miss.) Anesthesia Pain Center and Oxford (Miss.) Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.

11. Trivest Partners invested in Lexington, Ky.-based Bluegrass Orthopaedics, creating a nationally focused orthopedic management services organization. Bluegrass Orthopaedics anchors Trivest's orthopedic platform.

12. Life Spine secured investment from Granite Creek Capital Partners, which will help the implant manufacturer accelerate growth initiatives. 

13. Allscripts Healthcare Solutions partnered with Castleford Capital-backed U.S. Orthopedic Alliance to support growth initiatives with orthopedic practices.
