Avi Kumar, MD, completed the first shoulder replacement with mixed reality technology in the Sarasota, Fla., area.
Dr. Kumar, of Bradenton, Fla.-based Coastal Orthopedics, used Stryker's Blueprint Mixed Reality system, which gives physicians access to 3D holographic models during operations.
"Blueprint Mixed Reality’s 3D holographic models allow me to bring the preoperative plan into the operating room, in real time, and to visualize implant positioning that assists in surgical decision making," Dr. Kumar said in an Oct. 26 news release. "The state-of-the-art technology allows me to tailor shoulder joint replacement procedures to the unique needs and anatomy of my patients."
Dr. Kumar has been using Blueprint Mixed Reality since early 2021. Coastal Orthopedics' ASC is one of 15 sites in the U.S. employing the technology.
