New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery is partnering with sports technology company Sports Engineering to design athletic footwear that reduces the chance of foot and ankle injuries, the hospital said Jan. 27.
The hospital's orthopedic clinicians will help develop shoes that absorb horizontal and rotational movements commonly made by athletes.
The hospital has begun evaluating Sports Engineering's Smart Spring and Split Sole shoewear technologies to test how well they prevent various injuries such as ACL tears and medial tibial stress syndrome. The research is being conducted during physical assessments with human subjects and robotic simulation.
