Orthopedic developments and outpatient expansions are booming across the country as healthcare continues its shift to the ambulatory environment, where an aging elderly population are likely to receive their care in the future. 

Here are 28 orthopedic projects from hospitals, health systems and physician groups, opened or announced in the past year, that total more than $2.6 billion dollars:

1. The University of Virginia Health System opened a 195,000-square-foot orthopedic campus in Charlottesville. The $160 million campus, which opened in February, includes 90 exam rooms and four operating rooms, with plans to expand to six.

2. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences' Center of Excellence for Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation opened in December. The $21 million teaching hospital spans 50,000 square feet and is adjacent to UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho.

3. In November, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center opened a $100 million, 165,000-square-foot hospital for orthopedic, reconstructive and plastic surgery in Fairlawn, Ohio.

4. Atlanta-based Emory University Healthcare's Musculoskeletal Institute opened in October. The $130 million facility spans 180,000 square feet and is part of Emory's $1 billion health innovation district.

5. Chillicothe, Ohio-based Adena Health Systems opened a $70 million orthopedic center in September. The five-story, 11,000-square-foot center has 80 clinical exam rooms, six operating rooms and a 20-bed inpatient recovery unit.

6. The $150 million Orthopedic & Spine Tower at Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital opened in September. The facility comprises 24 operating rooms, 72 patient rooms and a joint replacement program.

7. Providence-based Ortho Rhode Island opened a $33 million flagship facility in April. The 66,000-square-foot facility includes an ASC with eight operating rooms.

8. Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center opened its $68 million expansion in Rancho Mirage, Calif., last year. The project added 46,000 square feet to the center and added six operating rooms to make space for robotic equipment and spine cases. The center now has eight operating rooms.

9. Phoenix-based Banner Health is developing a $54 million orthopedic sports medicine center in Scottsdale, Ariz. The center will include an ASC and a physical therapy, imaging and concussion center and is set to open in late 2022.

10. Spine Institute of Louisiana is working on a $20 million multidisciplinary spine hospital in Bossier City, La. The Spine Center of Excellence, a 34,000-square-foot facility, will include an ASC with four operating rooms. It is expected to open in the fall.

11. Rochester, N.Y.-based UR Medicine is developing a $240 million orthopedic campus. The 330,000-square-foot campus will be one of the country's largest for orthopedics. The campus's ASC is expected to be open by 2022, with the patient tower targeted for 2023.

12. Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth expects to open a $100 million facility that will be Rothman Orthopaedic Institute's Florida headquarters in late 2022. The 12-story, 300,000-square-foot medical office building in Orlando, Fla., will be at AdventHealth's Health Village campus in Orlando, Fla.

13. Coastal Orthopedics is developing an 88,000-square-foot facility medical center and headquarters in Bradenton, Fla. The facility, expected to open this spring, will include an ASC, physician offices, physical therapy and imaging services.

14. Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, is building a six-story spine and orthopedic tower that will cost $120 million. The center will treat spine, cranial neurosurgery and complex orthopedic trauma patients and will open in the first half of 2022.

15. Parkview Medical Center's $58 million orthopedic hospital in Pueblo West, Colo., is set to open this year. The hospital will have 30 beds and will free up to 20 beds at the main campus in Pueblo, Colo.

16. Neenah, Wis.-based Neuroscience Group, along with ThedaCare and Hand to Shoulder Center of Wisconsin, both in Appleton, are developing a $144 million orthopedic and spine center. The 230,000-square-foot facility will include a medical office building, surgery center and a 25-bed orthopedic and spine hospital. It is expected to open this year.

17. Orlando (Fla.) Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute, a $250 million project, is on track to open in 2023. An adjacent medical pavilion and a 12-operating room ASC will open in late 2022.The 75-bed hospital will span 195,000 square feet and is anticipated to bring 500 jobs to the community.

18. In November, United Regional Health Care Systems gained approval to build a $26 million orthopedic and sports medicine center in Wichita Falls, Texas. The 41,000-square-foot center is expected to open in 2023. 

19. Columbus, Ohio-based Orthopedic One broke ground on its new Westerville headquarters in October. The 80,000-square-foot center will cost $24 million and is set to open in spring 2023.

20. Christus Good Shepherd Health System is developing a $35 million facility that will create the first orthopedic institute in Longview, Texas. The campus, expected to open in spring 2023, aims to offer one location for integrated, multidisciplinary orthopedic care.

21. Orthopaedic Medical Group of Tampa Bay (Fla.) is building a 37,000-square-foot complex in Lithia, Fla., that will serve as its new headquarters. The practice aims to have 50 to 75 staff at the complex, which will include an ASC and medical offices.

22. University of Tennessee Medical Center and OrthoTennessee are building an orthopedic institute in Knoxville, Tenn., with an orthopedic ASC and a research center. The 91,000-square-foot facility will employ 150 people, including 14 orthopedic surgeons.

23. Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger is planning a $180 million orthopedic center in Buckhorn, Pa. Construction on the Orthopaedic Center Pennsylvania will begin in early 2022, with its opening set for 2024.

24. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is building an $85 million surgical facility in Little Rock. The facility will include 12 operating rooms and 12 exam rooms dedicated to orthopedics and physical medicine and rehabilitation. It is expected to open by spring 2023.

25. Construction is underway on New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's 100,000-square-foot tower that will specialize in spine surgery and joint replacement. The 12-story tower will include three private inpatient floors, multidisciplinary medical teams and on-site imaging.

26. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health is developing a 12-operating room orthopedic hospital and two clinics as part of a $209.5 million expansion. The hospital is set to open in 2023.  

27. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is developing a $150 million spine and orthopedic hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 72-bed hospital, expected to open in January 2023, will include 10 operating rooms, a medical office building and an ASC.

28. Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health and New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C., will break ground on a $210 million orthopedic hospital this spring. The 66-bed hospital is expected to open in 2024.
