The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons presented awards to three surgeons March 24.
Keith Feder, MD, earned the AAOS Humanitarian Award. Dr. Feder was recognized for more than 25 years of service. He founded the West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation, a nonprofit promoting fitness and providing opportunities to low-income high school students.
Cato Laurencin, MD, PhD, earned the AAOS Diversity Award. He has spent 40 years promoting racial and gender diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. He was the second Black chair at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, heading the orthopedic surgery department. Under his leadership, the number of student applicants who were Black, Indigenous or people of color for externship orthopedic surgery rotations rose exponentially.
Andrew Gurman, MD, earned the AAOS William W. Tipton Jr., MD, Leadership Award, the organization's highest honor. He is one of two orthopedic surgeons to be named president of the American Medical Association. He has held leadership positions in other professional societies, including the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
