New York City Ballet orthopedic surgeon dies at 90

William Hamilton, MD, New York City Ballet's first in-house physician died at age 90, The New York Times reported April 13.

Five things to know:

1. Dr. Hamilton joined New York City Ballet in 1972 as an in-house doctor. In 1980, he was hired to work as the attending surgeon for American Ballet Theater.

2. Along with his work at ballet companies, he served their affiliated schools and consulted for Broadway shows and New York professional sports teams.

3. He was known for flagging early signs of chronic, debilitating problems in dancers and kept a ballet barre in his examining room.

4. He served as the president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

5. Dr. Hamilton worked as a surgeon until he was 81 but continued to work as a consultant.
