Dane Wukich, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, received an award from Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Georgetown University Hospital for his work in limb salvaging.

Dr. Wukich earned the MedStar Georgetown Distinguished Achievement Award in Diabetic Limb Salvage, according to a May 16 news release. He is known globally for his ability to reconstruct dislocated foot and ankle bones in patients with the diabetic complication, Charcot arthropathy.

About one-third of Dr. Wukich's patients are diabetic. He works with UT Southwestern's Wound Care Clinic, which decreased the percentage of diabetic patients who had a leg amputation from 75 percent to almost 35 percent since 2014, the release said.
