Hip device earns breakthrough designation

Orthopedic

JointMedica's Polymotion hip resurfacing system received the FDA's breakthrough device designation.

The Polymotion system has the biomechanical benefits of hip resurfacing without metal-on-metal articulating surfaces, according to a May 17 news release. Breakthrough designation is for products that provide for more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions; application to the program is voluntary.

Polymotion will complement Exactech’s Alteon hip arthroplasty portfolio. Exactech is a minority shareholder of JointMedica.
