The National Institutes of Health awarded a prestigious orthopedic training and research grant to Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Health's orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering departments.
The T32 training program grant is designed to boost the departments' capacity to train and educate the next generation of scientists in musculoskeletal research, the health system said in a June 7 news release. UC Davis is one of six orthopedic surgery departments in the nation to earn the grant.
UC Davis said its training program, called the MUscoloSkeletal Clinical Learning Experience, is a joint venture between the orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering departments. It is intended to fund four predoctoral students.
It will focus on three areas: the biomechanics of musculoskeletal tissues during development, disease, repair and aging; tissue engineering and regeneration of connective tissues; and translational or applied research.
"We are thrilled to receive this grant in partnership with biomedical engineering," orthopedic surgery chair Robert Randall, MD, said in the release. "This will provide our trainees with unparalleled exposure to the clinical challenges associated with musculoskeletal research."
