Daniel Jones, MD, completed the first knee replacement with the Persona IQ smart implant in Florida on May 26.
The case was completed at Stuart-based South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, according to a July 13 news release. The Persona IQ implant has de novo status from the FDA and has a sensor that measures a patient's range of motion, step count, walking speed and other gait metrics.
"This innovative device and system allows me to access objective kinematic data directly from the implant post-surgery," Dr. Jones said in the release. "This is done securely with only data that helps us make decisions that will better the outcomes of total knee arthroplasty. No GPS or tracking data is ever collected."
