Implant developer Exactech has announced the first orthopedic surgeries using the Newton Knee, a new total knee replacement technology, in a July 14 press release.
The Newton Knee is a robotic knee that allows users to control it with a modern technological* interface.
The NewtonKnee provides patients with increased flexibility, more user friendly controls and a more ergonomic design.
While the Newton Knee is currently in a pilot release program, Exatech hopes that they will be available to users in a limited capacity in the second half of 2022.
Three orthopedic surgeons, James Huddleston, MD, Raul Marquez, MD and Jeffrey R. Ginther, MD were the first physicians to perform surgeries with the Newton Knee.
“The dynamic nature of the Newton Knee is designed to reliably tense patients’ ligaments throughout the full arc of motion,” said Dr. Marquez. “This allows me to both personalize implant placement and balance the soft tissues as appropriate for the patient’s anatomy, rather than only modifying soft tissue to meet the needs of the implant.”
“By personalizing both hard and soft tissue preparation, the intended result would be a quicker recovery for patients and improved outcomes.”
The knee uses real-time GPS technology to send feedback to patients and doctors as things come up.
“The integration of the new instrumentation provides critical intra-operative data regarding soft tissue balance, which I find invaluable,” said Dr. Ginther.
