9 Black female orthopedic surgeons to know

There are only 50 Black female orthopedic surgeons practicing in the U.S., making up only 0.6 percent of all orthopedic surgeons, according to an Oct. 10 report from the Post and Courier.

The first Black female orthopedic surgeon, Claudia Thomas, MD, began practicing in 1980 at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University. 

Nine practicing Black female orthopedic surgeons to know: 

1. Shasta Henderson, MD, works at Charleston, S.C.-based Trident Orthopedic Specialists and focuses on wrist fractures. 

2. Claudia Thomas, MD, is a general orthopedic specialist who has been practicing for over 20 years at Lady Lake, Fla.-based Leesburg Regional Medical Center. 

3. Haydee Brown, MD, is a foot and ankle specialist who works at New York City-based Mount Sinai Hospital. 

4. Sonya Sloan, MD, is a general orthopedic surgeon who practices at Denver-based Gallup Indian Medical Center, where she has been practicing for over 20 years. 

5. Mychelle Shegog, MD, has been practicing as a sports medicine specialist for over 20 years, working with District of Columbia-based MedStar Washington Hospital Center. 

6. Monique Chambers, MD, has been an orthopedic surgery resident at Waco, Texas-based Baylor College of Medicine since 2018. 

7. Dana Jamison, MD, is a general orthopedic specialist at Phoenix-based Banner University Wound Care Institute. 

8. Vietta Johnson, MD, is a general orthopedic surgeon at Chicago-based Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center. 

9. Susan Stephens, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Concord, Ohio-based The Institute for Spine.
