Illinois' Prescription Monitoring Program to Join National Data Sharing Network

Pain Management

The Illinois Department of Human Services has announced that it's Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) has joined The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy's PMP InterConnect program, which will allow for greater identification and prevention of prescription drug abuse.
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy's PMP InterConnect program is a national data sharing network and facilitates the sharing of prescription information for controlled substances across state lines. The program will also allow the Illinois Department's PMP to identify when patients have been issued duplicate prescriptions for controlled substances across state lines and will alert dispensers when patients exceed recommended limits.

The PMP will integrate controlled substance prescription data into electronic health record systems to allow healthcare networks access to this information.
