Usman Zahir, MD, a spine surgeon at ScopeSpine-The Orthopaedic Group (Dulles, Va.) weighs many questions when it comes to trying new surgical technology.
He told Becker's Spine Review those factors and the questions he asks himself.
Question: What are key considerations when trying new surgical technology in your practice?
Dr. Usman Zahir: For me the key considerations are:
1. Does the technology promote efficiencies in the OR? Does it shorten the steps for a procedure without compromising potential outcomes? How many trays are associated with the device?
2. Does the tech minimize use of radiation? This primarily applies to new spinal implants and procedures.
3. Is it cost effective?
4. Does it allow for a less invasive approach than what the current standard offers?
