SI-Bone, a device-maker for sacroiliac joint pathology, has named Steven R. Garfin, MD, chair of its medical advisory board, according to a release from SI-Bone.
Dr. Garfin, who is chairman of orthopedics at the University of California, San Diego, will focus on the diagnostic algorithm and process for SI joint dysfunctions to educate surgeons on minimally invasive treatment options.
"The SI joint has been thought by many to be relatively unimportant as related to the cause of low back symptoms, including pain and disability," he stated in the release. "The initial research presented by surgeons and other clinicians at the Summit strongly suggests it is a real cause and may be a contributor to low back complaints and disability. The SI joint supports essentially all the weight of the spine."
