Spine Leaders

Douglas Geiger, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Ann Arbor (Mich.) Spine Center and is on staff at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Chelsea (Mich.) Community Hospital. He is a fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society and of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society and the Michigan Orthopedic Association. He is currently the director of the spine fellowship coordinated with the University of Toledo (Ohio) College of Medicine and Life Sciences.

Dr. Geiger is board certified and specializes in reconstructive surgery, deformity surgery in children and adults, and in minimally invasive spine surgery. His clinical interests include treating conditions such as degenerative spine, scoliosis, spinal fractures and spinal stenosis.

"Surgeons must use the words and phrases that Medicare and other payers are looking for in order to minimize denied claims and to more easily justify their anticipated surgery," said Dr. Geiger in a Becker's Spine Review article. "For instance, specifying instability or spondylolisthesis in a given case where these conditions exist, will help the insurance payor to understand that a fusion procedure was necessary."

Dr. Geiger earned his medical degree at the University of Toledo (Ohio) College of Medicine and Life Sciences. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., and he has also completed a spine surgery fellowship at Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis.
