Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Dean Karahalios of NorthShore Neurological Institute

Dean Karahalios, MD, practices with NorthShore Neurological Institute in Chicago and serves as an attending neurosurgeon at Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In 2013, he was appointed as clinical associate professor at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves and Illinois State Neurosurgical Society.

Dr. Karahalios' clinical interests include image-guided surgery, minimally invasive techniques, spinal fusion techniques, artificial disc replacement and spinal technology development. He is the owner and founding member of LANX, a start-up spinal implant company and serves in Medtronic's Spinal and Biologics Division as a lecturer, consultant and implant development team member. He has been involved in the development of numerous devices, including XVBR expandable cage for corpectomy reconstruction by Medtronic.

 

Dr. Karahalios is an active author and researcher. His work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including Neurosurgery and Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine. Additionally, Dr. Karahalios serves on surgical quality committee and operating room committee at the NorthShore University HealthSystem.

 

Dr. Karahalios earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and completed his neurosurgical residency at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, where he also completed a spinal surgery fellowship.
