Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Patrick Johnson of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

J. Patrick Johnson, MD, is a neurosurgeon and director of the Neurosurgery Spine Fellowship program in the department of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He previously served as the chief of neurosurgery at Olive View-University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. He also established a combined neurosurgery and orthopedic fellowship program when he served as director of the Cedars-Sinai Institute for Spinal Disorders.

Dr. Johnson serves as director of the California Association of Neurosurgeons, and is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and North American Spine Society.

 

Dr. Johnson has performed more than 6,000 surgical procedures for treatment of a number of spinal disorders including degenerative spine, traumatic spine, spinal cord injuries, spinal vascular malformations and spinal deformity disorders. His research interests include computer guided surgical applications and procedures, endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical procedures and motion preservation techniques.

 

Dr. Johnson has published more than 500 manuscripts, abstracts, books and book chapters. His work has appeared in professional journals, such as Spine, Neurosurgical Focus, Techniques in Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery.

 

Dr. Johnson earned his medical degree from the Oregon Health Science University in Portland and completed his neurosurgical residency at UCLA. He has also completed a spine surgery fellowship at Knoxville-based University of Tennessee and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.
