Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Allen Carl of Albany Medical Center

Allen Carl, MD, is a spine surgeon providing care at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center. He also has privileges at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. He is an inventor and has partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has patented an idea to treat scoliosis that realigns the spine but doesn't fuse it.

Dr. Carl focuses on scoliosis, spine trauma, spinal cord injury, spine deformity, disc herniation as well as degenerative and arthritic diseases of the spine. He was one of the first few physicians in his region to offer a minimally invasive treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis called X-STOP. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

 

Dr. Carl has contributed to a number of professional publications over the course of his career, including The Spine Journal and Journal of Spinal Disorders.

 

Dr. Carl earned his medical degree at State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed his residency at NYU Medical Center/ Bellevue Hospital Center in New York. He has also completed a spine surgery fellowship at The Toronto Hospital in Ontario, Canada.
