Matthew Cunningham, MD, PhD, is a board certified orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Dr. Cunningham is an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and the interim chief of the scoliosis service at HSS. He specializes in treatment of spine disorders and spine surgery for adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Cunningham runs a basic science research lab, where he developed a spinal fusion technique that uses an injection to eliminate the need for surgery altogether. He also conducts clinical research and participates in two multi-center study groups to improve pediatric and adult spine deformity surgical outcomes.
He received his medical and graduate degrees from New York City-based Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Cunningham completed his residency and underwent fellowship training at HSS. He is a reviewer on several medical journals and has published scientific articles and textbook chapters. He served as an educational consultant for DePuy Synthes and provided research support to K2M and RTI Surgical.
Dr. Cunningham is a volunteer surgeon for the Foundation for Orthopaedics and Complex Spine and has provided underserved populations in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Barbados with surgical and non-surgical care. Dr. Cunningham is active in sports, competing in lifeguard relays with the Borough of Bradley Beach and remaining highly involved with Columbia's "P&S" Rugby Club. He has completed two New York City marathons.
